Carlos Saldanha makes his directorial live-action feature film debut with Harold and The Purple Crayon. Zachary Levi, Lil Rel Howery, and Benjamin Bottani star in the movie adaptation of the children's book. The script is by David Guion and Michael Handelman. The movie will be released this summer.
An adaption of the book has been attempted many times. Including a computer-animated concept. Saldanha is no stranger to computer animation. Directing such films as Rio, Robots and Ice Age.
"Inside his book, adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book's pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life." (IMDB) Zachary Levi plays Harold.
Harold and the Purple Crayon was published in 1955. In 1992, the rights to the book were acquired. In 1994, writers were brought in to develop the film. Before production began, the project was abandoned. In 2010, a computer-animated version was in development. Levi was announced as part of the production in 2021, with the film now being a mix of animation and live-action. Filming took place the following year in 2022.
Harold and the Purple Crayon is "Rated PG for mild action and thematic elements."
